Năm 1958, Tiến sĩ Trương Bửu Lâm làm Giám Đốc Viện Khảo Cổ Saigon. Cùng trong khoảng này, ông là giáo sư Sử-Học tại Đại Học Văn Khoa và Đại Học Sư Phạm Saigon. Ông cũng là giáo sư thỉnh giảng tại Đại Học Huế. Sau đó it lâu, ông ra dạy học ở ngoại quốc thì giáo sư Nguyễn Khắc Kham thay ông làm giáo đốc Viện Viện Khảo Cổ Saigòn. Ở Mỹ, ông dạy môn Sử tại Viện Đại-Học Hawaii trong nhiều năm.

Truong Buu Lam earned his Doctorate in History at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. From 1957 to 1964, he directed the Institute of Historical Research (Vien Khao Co) and taught history at the Universities of Saigon and Hue. He came to the US in 1964 and worked as a Research Associate at the East Asia Research Center, Harvard University (1964-65), the Southeast Asian Studies, Yale University (65-66) and the Southeast Asian Program, Cornell University (66-68). He taught History of Southeast Asia at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1968-1971) and the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1971 to his retirement in 2001.

He is the author of Patterns of Vietnamese Response to Foreign Intervention (1968); New Lamps for Old (1982); Resistance, Rebellion, Revolution (1984); Colonialism Experienced (2000).
